SWANSEA-Belmont ironman Adrian Tobin stuck to his race plan but could manage only eighth in the second round of the National Surf League at Mooloolaba yesterday.

In a close finish, only 10 seconds separated first from eighth place.

Tobin, 22, went into the race with the plan to lead from the start.

Representing Tasmania, Tobin led when the field hit the water for the first swim leg, but fell behind at the second swim marker in controversial circumstances.

`I led to the first swim can, then we got to the second swim can and was I sitting second behind Stephen Short,' Tobin said.

`I'm not sure if a few of the guys went around the can or not, but they dived under and when they popped up from the second turn I was about sixth or seventh.'

South Australia representative Steven Meredith finished second, while Dean Mercer (Victoria) was third.

Dixon Park's Ryan Norrie, in his second attempt in the national league, finished last in the surf race.
