Eckstein Takes Surf Series Trial

Monday October 23, 2000

Surfers Paradise 17-year-old Shannon Eckstein sprinted to victory to win the Uncle Tobys Super Series Trial at Mooloolaba yesterday to claim the first of nine series positions on offer.

Racing in a 1m surf with a torrid shore dump, Eckstein crossed ahead of Maroubra's Kane Heussner with North Curl Curl's Greg Miller third.

Eckstein was always the man to beat yesterday by leading the opening run leg then maintaining a top-five position in the board, ski and swim before blitzing the field in the final 400m sprint to the finish.

Past Uncle Tobys competitors to win through the trial include Glenn Cowdrey, Brett Tyack and Leon Kay.

The opening round of the Super Series is at Newcastle Beach on November 12.
