South Coast Ironmen Shine
Illawarra Mercury
Monday October 25, 1999
Former champion Guy Andrews won the race, but four Illawarra and South Coast ironmen also left Mooloolaba as winners after booking spots in the Uncle Toby's Super Series with high finishes in yesterday's trial.
Shoalhaven Heads pair Wes Berg and Drew Cairncross, North Wollongong's Jonathon Crowe and Wollongong City's Ben Squiers all finished in the top 12 of the 30-man final to earn a contract for the coming season.
Cairncross finished second in the final, with Berg fifth, Crowe eighth and Squiers tenth.
Crowe's qualification came just months after he was contemplating retirement after losing his contract at the end of last season.
While four made it through to the main event, Louis Whant and Mark Norris both failed to qualify.
Crowe, Squiers, Berg and Cairncross will join North Wollongong's Phil Clayton in the series.
In the women's trials, 16-year-old Russell Vale ironwoman Kristie Ogilvie, who competes for North Wollongong SLSC, finished 11th in her race to secure a Meadow Lee contract for season 1999-2000.
